The expectation is that Stafford will be a backup for one season to veteran Daunte Culpepper, who is under contract with Detroit for one more year as he continues his effort to revive his once successful career. The Lions also would like to upgrade their offensive line for Stafford once he becomes the starter. Stafford could become part of a strong combination with wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who was the No. 2 overall pick in 2006 and tallied 1,331 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last season.
Stafford’s contract represents an increase of almost $7 million in guaranteed money over the six-year deal that last year’s No. 3 overall pick Matt Ryan signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
All for a quarterback that has never played a single down at the NFL level.
Martin Mayhew had supposedly reached an agreement with Aaron Curry , and was using that as a way to get Stafford to sign a contract by draft day. If Stafford wouldn't sign , Mayhew was going to sing Curry. Earlier today NFL.com reported that this was malarkey , and that the Lions were going to pick Stafford at #1 no matter what. Now that appears to be the case , and Mayhew can try to convince the world on how he got Stafford to sign such a cheap contract , but that would be a flat out lie.
Maybe Lions fans should be used to hearing all the 'tall tales' from the front office by now , like my favorite recent tale:
Mayhew says the Lions are going to develop their draft picks.
Let me tell you something you may or may not know , Drew Stanton is done in Detroit , having only one season and 17 pass attempts. He was a second round pick , and will need a miracle to see the field in the regular season this year.
Another tall tale I found enjoyable this off season was when Martin Mayhew said repeatdly that the Lions were planning on getting a veteran backup QB in free agency. They have yet to try to contact a single free agent QB. Leftwich was signed last week and the Lions didn't even bat an eyelid. The Lions were approached by the Broncos about the Cutler deal , as were the Vikings and the Bucs. The Lions did not try that on their own , and if they were not approached , they would not have tried to get Cutler when they did.
I will predict right now that the #20 pick in the draft will not be a MLB.
I will also state that the Lions did not sign Stafford to trade him , no teams will take that contract.
Looks like the same old Lions to me.
